Lintel

What happens to your benefits if you work

A lintel is the beam over a doorway. It carries the weight above the opening so people can walk through it.

Choose your entrance

Four doors. Pick the one that is yours.

These are not four versions of the same form. The rules behind each door are genuinely different, and mixing them up is the most common and most expensive mistake in this system.

Why these are separated

SSDI is insurance you paid for through work. SSI is assistance based on need. They share an agency and almost nothing else — different limits, different protections, different consequences for working. Putting them behind one form makes people answer the wrong question.

The veteran doors are separate for the same reason, and for one more. There is a substantive difference in the arithmetic: VA compensation does not touch SSDI at all, and it reduces SSI almost dollar for dollar. A veteran who walks through a general door gets a number that is wrong. Beyond the math, someone who served did not arrive here the same way, and the entrance should not pretend otherwise.
